Moving from one office to another is rarely a life-and-death situation.  But, in the case of one of Yorel’s Eastern seaboard clients – a municipal government responsible for the health and welfare of its 100,000 inhabitants, relocating its data center and 911 operation were events that did, indeed, leave lives hanging in the balance.

 

The move, which called for the temporary loss of the city office’s email, databases, backup systems, operating systems, storage networks, and, perhaps most importantly, the temporary loss of its 911 system, began at 6 a.m. on a Saturday morning, the first day of a three-day weekend.  The city’s data center manager expected the move to take until Sunday to complete, and was pleased that the government offices would be closed the following Monday to allow time to recover from any potential errors.

 

But because Yorel had so precisely pre-planned everything from labeling cables to moving computers to timing on-site work down to the minute, the job was completed by 3 p.m. on Saturday, the same day it was begun, and all systems were up, running and tested before Yorel left the site with no glitches whatsoever – a significant feat.  Not only did Yorel’s exceptional planning save lives by appropriate interim management and a quick reinstatement of the city’s 911 system, but it also saved the city 30% over bids from nationally recognized – and much larger – competitive firms.
